Soeria van den Wijngaard

She studies and builds experiences with different modes of listening
and is especially interested in the combination of sound and the imagination.
Just as the sense of smell can trigger memories that are not actively accessible,
sound also has this potential.

What is your mind’s eye showing you when you are listening?
Is it your memory showing you images from past experiences that sounded similair? Or is it your imagination? What does our imagination consist of?
How can we use this ability of the brain in our advantage?
Because our mind is so strong, I believe we can use sound & the mind’s eye for healing our emotional wounds.

Healing and helping the planet starts by healing and helping ourselves.

Her work is to be experienced in the dark, preferably laying down.
Reactions afterwards have been: ‘cinematic’, ‘intimate’ and ‘it reminded me of the time when I (...)’

Her main medium is (binaural) fieldrecording.
All of her sounds are recorded and edited by her.

Rather than focussing on the sounds of the city or nature only,
Soeria focusses her work on the small,
and above all relational.

and ephemerality
are at the core
of all her works.

“You give me one situation in which bravery did not involve risk, emotional exposure or insecurity”
